There's a question upper cervical doctors hear so often we could print it on the intake forms: why didn't I know about this before? Patients ask it with an edge, and honestly, they're entitled to it. Some of them suffered for a decade within driving distance of an answer. Jeff Scholten spends this video on why that keeps happening, and his explanation rings true to everything I've seen in my own practice.
If someone already worked on my neck, what's left to try?
The main thing left is measurement. The distinguishing feature of this discipline isn't where the hands go, it's what happens before and after. A craniocervical workup measures the junction precisely, often with dedicated imaging. The correction is calculated from those measurements and delivered without force. Then, and this is the part almost nobody has experienced, the result gets verified and monitored over months. General manipulation, mobilization, and massage share none of that workflow. Jeff's observation is that patients only grasp the difference once they feel how differently they're assessed and managed. Until then, "upper cervical" sounds like a fancy name for something they already tried. The people this costs most are the complex cases: the chronic headaches, the stubborn dizziness, the neck pain that outlasted six providers.
So how do people finally get here?
Somebody tells them. That person was told by somebody else. Jeff's whole marketing theory fits in a sentence: take excellent care of the person in front of you, and tell the story plainly so the next sufferer doesn't need five years and a lucky dinner conversation. That's what his video is, and honestly, that's what this post is too. If you're reading this because a friend pushed a link on you, then you've just seen Jeff's point in action. Word of mouth works, it's just slower than anyone suffering deserves.
